Last Minute Gifts That Keep On Giving! | www.qgazette.com | Queens Gazette

Last Minute Gifts That Keep On Giving!

With only 24 days this year between Thanksgiving and Christmas, we an all find ourselves lost in the land of last-minute gift shopping.

If you are finding it hard to come up with unique gift ideas because of the short season, or if you are having trouble finding the right gift for that hard-to-please person, you might want to consider giving a membership to a health or sports club, or one of a variety of clubs that offer gift cards in a variety of choices, from wine and beer, to jams, cheeses, to "Fruit of the Month" baskets.

Consider giving a "green gift" that gives back to the environment or a gift that helps a favorite charity. There are dozens of websites that list gifts that give back in many ways - from helping to save the life of a child to rescuing an abandoned or abused pet by donating to a local shelter.

Gifts that keep giving can include computer lessons, gym membership or gift cards to help pay for medications. Let us help with these suggestions:

  • Personalize It! Everybody has a favorite photo of friends or family members that can be printed onto a calendar, blown up to poster size or mounted in a special frame to make the perfect holiday gift. Act now and there is still plenty of time to order personalized gifts.
  • Give a gift that grows. Potted plants are a terrific idea because they are a wonderful addition to interior decoration - and they help clean the air. With so many household plants readily available you are sure to find one that's perfect for the person who has everything.
  • Give an experience. Often, it's not what's in the box, but the memory that stays with friends and family, long after the holidays. Giving an experience can make a truly meaningful gift.

Just think about what interests the person has, or an activity they've enjoyed - like a hot air balloon ride or white water rafting. If the person loves to shop, arrange for them to accompany a personal shopper for a day and let them see what it's like to shop for the stars. If the person loves to cook, purchase a spot in a class taught by Bobby Flay, or another Food Network star.

  • ."Mommy and Me" aprons make a great gift for children and all proceeds benefit St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital, which provides life-saving treatment for youngsters with catastrophic illnesses. For information visit www.shop.stjude.org.
  • Give your child a new pair of shoes and TOMS shoes will donate a matching pair for a child who has no shoes. For details visit www.tonsshoes.com.
  • Help a family member support a pet by paying for a license or veterinary services. Give a gift card for pet food or buy toys for cats and dogs from the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (barnardos christmas cards). All proceeds are used to help animals in need. For information visit www.aspca.org.
  • Give the gift of computer literacy. Pay for a course in computer instruction for any family member or friend - regardless of age.

Learning to master the Internet and other computer functions opens doors for seniors who live too far away for frequent visits.

Give A Day Trip: If you are at a loss for just the right gift, consider buying tickets on a bus headed for Atlantic City.

You can purchase a package that includes transportation and lunch, which will also provide a voucher (in a predetermined amount) that can be exchanged at slot machines and tables at casinos.

  • Basketful of Cheer: If you are in the market for a gift for someone who is homebound or for a hard-to-please senior, consider buying a gift basket - wicker, felt, wire or other. Fill the basket with an assortment of post cards, greeting cards, thank you notes, pens, pencils, markers (different sizes and colors), wrapping paper, scotch tape, packing tape, gift tags, shipping labels, shipping paper, postage stamps and other items that can be used on a daily basis by those who love to stay in touch with friends and family without using a computer. Include a note in the basket - a reminder that mail carriers will pick up letters and parcels from people who can't get to a Post Office or a mailbox.
  • A membership to a local health club, aerobics or other class could be the perfect surprise for runners and sports enthusiasts on your list. And remember - today's seniors are more likely to run a race than rock themselves to sleep.
  • If you have an aspiring student (young or senior) on your gift list, consider prepaying for a course at a local college or specialty school. It's a thoughtful, unusual gift that might pave the way to a new beginning for someone special.
  • Consider giving a gift of your services to someone on your list who may need a little extra help.

Offer free child care to a single parent, so they can go out for an evening - or an afternoon, without worrying about the kids, offer your time to help clean out a closet, cook some meals or help with supermarket shopping or a trip to the doctor.

You might also consider purchasing a Gift Card from a pharmacy or medical supply shop patronized by a senior friend or family member.

It's the perfect gift for seniors who are trying to meet the skyrocketing costs of prescription medications and other supplies.

Give a gift card from a hair or beauty salon, a beauty supply store or for a fill-up at a local gas station. Give a gift card for "Lunch For Two" at a local diner or restaurant, or for a year's worth of treats at a Baskin Robbins or Dunkin' Donuts shop.

Considering the current state of the economy, anyone would welcome a gift card that provides necessities - or plain good fun.

You might also consider purchasing gift cards from local supermarkets. The cards, sold in different denominations, are available at store courtesy desks. They make a perfect gift for friends and family members who are struggling to make ends meet.

The cards are available in a series of holiday designs, in denominations ranging from $10 to $100 at most major supermarkets.

One of the best gifts is still a free Library Card. It's an invitation to the world of books, free computer use, discussions and free classes.

Do something different, like purchasing a library book for just $25, in someone's name, that will be placed on the shelves of the local library. Go to www.quenslibraryfoundation.org for complete information.

And don't forget about the gift that keeps on giving - a subscription to the Queens Gazette. To purchase a Gazette gift subscription call 718-361-6161 or visit us online at www.gazette.com.

IP investors to enjoy increased incentives - News VietNamNet

VietNamNet Bridge - New incentives to attract investment into industrial parks nationwide were announced by the Ministry of Planning and Investment last week.

Vietnam Singapore Industrial Park.- File Photo

Under the amended Corporate Income Tax Law, new tenants in the country's IPs (excluding special IPs in inner districts of big cities) will enjoy corporate income tax exemption for two years, and will only have to pay 50 per cent of this tax for the following four year.

Vu Dai Thang, Chief of MPI's Economic Management Department, said that 212 new IPs covering 120,000 - 130,000ha would be established by 2020.

As of November 2013, xo so kien thiet Nam had 289 industrial parks covering 81,500ha.

However, to ensure that the new IPs operate effectively, the Government issued Circular 164/2013 on 12 November 2013 under which provinces planning to develop new parks must have at least 60 per cent occupation in existing ones.

The new circular also stipulates the responsibility of related agencies in developing accommodation for workers in IPs, economic zones, and in creating favourable conditions for IP workers to enjoy health and cultural services in their respective localities.

It requires IP developers to add housing development plans.

IPs facing difficulties in developing accommodation for workers are allowed to adjust their zoning plans to use plots within the park for the purpose.

The ministry also has incentives to encourage manufacturers in existing IPs increase capital for expanding their facilities, according to Tran Duy Dong, deputy chief of the Economic Management Department.

Dong said Viet Nam's IPs were more competitive than other countries in the region in terms of workers salaries, and water and electricity fees.

In Ha Noi, a worker's salary was between US$145 - $148 per month, which was more competitive than Thailand, Dong was quoted by the Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper as saying.

However, office and factory rentals were increasing in Viet Nam, exceeding those in the Philippines, Cambodia and Myanmar.

Dong said Viet Nam would further liberalise its investment environment and promote selective investment for development.

Local farmers run out of paddy as prices increase

After Viet Nam won the contract to export 500,000 tonnes of rice to the Philippines, local exporters now have to be careful about signing other export contracts as local farmers do not have much paddy in reserve.

Viet Nam Food Association (VFA) Chairman Truong Thanh Phong said on Thursday that rice prices had been on the rise in the local market, with 5 per cent broken rice priced at VND8,750 (US$4,14) per kilo.

Farmers from the Mekong provinces of An Giang, Kien Giang and Soc Trang were selling dried paddy from the current autumn - winter at VND5,500 to VND6,000 per kg compared with less than VND5,000 per kg in the last winter-spring and summer-autumn crops.

Despite the higher prices, most farmers in the delta had very little autumn-winter paddy to sell.

Phong was quoted by Sai Gon Tiep Thi (Sai Gon Marketing) news magazine as saying "rice inventory levels are low."

Under the government-to-government agreement signed with the Philippines, Viet Nam will deliver 20,000 to 30,000 tonnes of rice to Filipino warehouses by 15 December 2013, followed by some 120,000 tonnes to reach the country between December 15 and 31.

These volumes will help the Filipino Government provide relief to over four million citizens affected by super storm Haiyan.

According to the Viet Nam Food Association (VFA), the remaining volume of rice under the contract will be shipped to the Philippines in next year's first quarter. Given the volume contracted earlier, the shipment to the Philippines will be 700,000 tonnes, far exceeding the amount shipped to this buyer in this year's first quarter.

Phong said the export price (of the contract for the Philippines) was "good."

Viet Nam had beaten Thailand in a competitive bidding round organised by the Philippines on November 26 to win the deal. Cambodia, the other competitor, dropped its bid at the last minute.

Customs data show that Viet Nam shipped 362,000 tonnes of rice worth US$160 million to the Philippines from January until October. It also exported 128,500 tonnes of the grain worth $75 million to Indonesia and over 400,000 tonnes worth $201 million to Malaysia.

VFA says on its website that Viet Nam has shipped 5.93 million tonnes of rice to foreign buyers with a total value of $2.55 billion.

Last year, Indonesia imported 930,000 tonnes of rice from Viet Nam, while the Philippines bought 1.1 million tonnes and Malaysia nearly 765,000 tonnes.

These three countries used to be the biggest buyers of Vietnamese rice before being overtaken by China, which imported nearly 2.1 million tonnes of rice from Viet Nam in 2012.

VFA estimates that the country will export 6.6-6.7 million tonnes of rice under official contracts this year. With an estimated 1.5 million tonnes sold to China under border trade (without customs declarations) Viet Nam's rice exports would exceed 8 million tonnes in 2013.

These figures back assertions that rice supply in the local market is nearly exhausted, experts say.

Illegal foreign factories damage local environment

Local residents in the Cuu Long (Mekong) Delta have stepped up complaints about environmental problems caused by factories illegally built by foreign enterprises in the region.

Authorities in Ben Tre say at least 10 foreign investors have rented over 82ha of land illegally in the province. A report prepared by the Ben Tre Province People's Committee says three of the 10 foreign-invested enterprises are specialised in aquaculture and the other seven in coconut production and processing.

Ca Mau Province is facing the same problem.

Residents of Khanh Hoi Commune in the province's U Minh District have complained about the problems caused by the factory built by a 100 per cent Chinese-invested enterprise Hoi Nguyen Thang.

Residents living near Khanh Hoi Commune Market have to suffer bad odour and fishy smell from the seafood processing factory, owned by Chinese businessman Chen Zi Sheng.

Le Thi Ut, a commune resident, said the bad odour has caused many residents to suffer from rhinitis.

Nguyen Thi Hoang, another commune resident, said the smell suffocates her, especially at night.

The smoke and dust from the factory have also polluted the environment in the region, Hoang said.

Huynh Van Tieng, Deputy Head of U Minh District's Resources and Environment Division, said the owner of Hoi Nguyen Thang factory has paid fines of VND14 million for violations. He has been asked to deal with and settle the problems caused by the plant, including building a wastewater treatment system for it.

Vo Minh A, chief of the Cooperation and Investment Division under the Ca Mau Department of Planning and Investment, told Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper that Chen Zi Sheng had signed a contract to lease 2,300 sq.m of agricultural land owned by local resident Bui Kim Xuyen and built the Hoi Nguyen Thang factory on it.

However, an official from the provincial investigation agency said the contract was illegal.

He said only provincial authorities were allowed to sign land-leasing contracts with a 100 per cent foreign-owned business.

Nikon D5300 First Shots: Can Nikon's new mid-level DSLR not only beat the D5200, but compete with the D7100?

<Nikon D5300 Dealsp>by Roger Slavens

In less than a year's time, the recently introduced Nikon D5300 has replaced the mid-level consumer D5200 DSLR. And while its upgrades may not be revolutionary, the new model stands as a compelling, affordable option for advanced amateurs who may be eyeing the higher-end, prosumer D7100 -- as well as an enticement for owners of Nikon's older models to take a step up. We just got the Nikon D5300 into the lab, and we've published our first batch of First Shots -- Still Life* test images -- for you to analyze closely.

The D5300's enhanced DX-format, 24-megapixel APS-C-type CMOS sensor was designed to maximize the camera's resolving power by omitting the optical low-pass filter (as Nikon did earlier this year with the D7100). If the D5300 can minimize moire and anti-aliasing as well as the D7100 did, forgoing the OLPF in a consumer-friendly DSLR could be the move that opens up a realm of incredible detail and sharpness to a mass audience. What's more, the D5300 incorporates Nikon's latest processor -- the EXPEED 4 -- which even the company's most recently announced full-frame prosumer DSLR, the D610, doesn't have. This next-generation imaging engine purports optimize the DSLR's detail-versus-noise output and enhance color accuracy, and its improved ISO sensitivity -- now ranging from 100 to 12,800 in standard mode -- could up the ante on low-light performance.

How do all these upgrades translate in terms of image quality?

Check out our Nikon D5300 First Shots for yourself. And be sure to pit these test images side-by-side with those from the D5200, D7100 -- or any other camera we've ever tested -- via our Comparometer™ image quality comparison tool.

For more information about the DSLR's new features and specs, read our first impressions Nikon D5300 review. In addition to image quality and performance enhancements, the camera also boasts built-in Wi-Fi functionality and GPS -- the first Nikon DSLR to do so -- as well as a more compact and lightweight design, and a 3-2-inch tilt-swivel LCD monitor that features a whopping 1,037K dots of resolution.

* Use our Still Life target images to look for detail (tone-on-tone, fine, highlights, shadows), as well as noise suppression, white balance, color accuracy and color shape retention.

Nikon P7800 review

<Nikon D5300 Discountp>

What is the Nikon P7800?

Nikon's advanced compact offering has long taken the form of the Coolpix 'P' series, with the four-digit range sitting at the top and looking to offer a suitable companion to it's DSLR range for those wanting at times to travel light. The Nikon P7800 is the latest model that looks to build on the success of the previous models in the series with a range of new features and take on the Canon G16.

But, with the growth of the advanced compact market, as well as the drop in price of competing CSCs, the question is does the P7800 remain a relevant shooting proposition, or has technological advancement rendered it obsolete?

SEE ALSO: 10 best cameras you can buy

Nikon P7800: Features

One of the core features that has made the high-end P series a success in previous generations is the fact that it features a larger sensor than is normally found in a compact, and the P7800 retains this selling point.

The P7800 retains the same 12.2MP BSI CMOS sensor as seen in the P7700, which measures in at 1/1.7-inches, as opposed to the smaller 1/2.3-inch sensor. The P7800's BSI sensor should handle noise better then the equivalent sensor technology, although it only has a native ISO 80-1600 - extendible to ISO 3200 and 6400.

Another feature maintained from the previous generation model is the 3-inch, 921k-dot LCD screen which, thanks to a side-mounted hinge, can be rotated around a 270 degree axis for viewing at a variety of angles.

SEE ALSO: 10 best DSLR cameras you can buy

The Nikon P7800 also retains the same 7.1x optical zoom as seen on the model's predecessor, covering an equivalent focal range of 28-200mm and offering an impressive maximum aperture between f/2 and f/4.

One of the standout new additions to the Nikon P7800 is sure to be popular amongst some enthusiast photographers. It now features a relatively substantial electronic viewfinder that measures in at 0.5-inches, has a resolution of 921k-dots and also features a dioptre adjustment.

Another notable feature is the Nikon video capture functionality that's better than some competing models. The P7800 captures full HD video at 1920 x 1080 and at 30fps, while advanced functionality such as wind noise reduction, in-built ND filter and manual exposure control also feature.

While there's no doubting the P7800's positioning as an advanced compact - as shown through the inclusion of PASM shooting modes - it also caters for those that might want to let the camera do the work.

It does so through the presence of an auto shooting mode, a range of scene modes and a host of creative 'Effects' such as 'Cross Process' and 'Zoom Exposure'.

One feature which is sorely missed, owing to the fact that it's now commonplace on competing cameras, is Wi-Fi functionality. Both Wi-Fi and GPS tagging are available with the P7800 although only through the purchase of optional accessories.

Nikon D5300 hands-on review

Nikon Nikon D5300 Black Friday Deal at a glance:

Nikon D5300 - Introduction

While the serious enthusiast is unlikely to be swayed into buying a Nikon DSLR over a Canon model purely because the Nikon camera is newer, the reality is that at the non-premium end of the market this is how some people make their buying decisions. 'Newer' must mean 'better'.

This demand for the 'new' explains why we see such short product cycles in the camera market, and why manufacturers feel the need to introduce even small advances in technology or feature sets in cameras with completely new names - rather than a 'Mark II' type of naming format.

Those familiar with Nikon's range of DSLRs may not see the sense in the company's introduction of the new D5300, especially as Nikon will maintain the D5200 alongside this model in the range - new and old together. By doing so, though, Nikon expands the number of cameras it has on offer and the number of price points it can cover, while also being able to have a model that can carry a 'New' sticker, and which introduces new features to the price band in which it will sit.

That's not to say that the Nikon D5300 isn't different to the D5200, though, as a new processor, new body design and the integration of wireless communications do genuinely bring additional benefits to the photographer.

Nikon D5300 - Design and handling

Nikon is very pleased that it has achieved a new way of constructing camera bodies, which it describes as a 'monocoque'. Instead of there being a chassis, onto which the components and the body shell are attached, the D5300 is designed to have everything screwed to the insides of the body form itself: exoskeleton, rather then the usual endoskeleton.

Image: The top of the camera houses only a few control points, keeping the layout simple and unintimidating for newcomers. A stereo microphone lives in front of the hotshoe

The D5300's body shell is also made of a new material, although Nikon won't say what that new material is - just that it is new. The upshot is that the body is less heavy than it might have been, and is 25g lighter, including the battery, than the camera it doesn't replace, the D5200.

I'm not entirely sure that when I used the camera I could appreciate the exact weight loss that has occurred, but I was able to enjoy the fact that this is truly a lightweight DSLR, of the type that we might not mind carrying all day, over the shoulder, in a bag or in a large pocket. The body is very small too, although it is balanced with a reassuringly large grip for the right hand. It seems ironic that a small and light camera should need a large grip, but I found it allowed me to be aware I was carrying the camera, and should a larger lens be attached it will help to support the forward pull of such a weight distribution.

Image: The body styling will be familiar to those used to the Nikon 5000 series, as will the standard menu. The 3.2in flip-out screen has impressive visibility

The buttons are arranged much as one might expect, with all the principal controls falling easily to the finger or thumb. The rear 3.2in LCD is very nicely bright and clear, with its 1.037-million-dot resolution. Nikon has set the viewing panel into the glass screen, so there are no gaps or internal reflections, which produces good contrast and a clear view from a quoted angled of up to 170°. I am impressed.

In live view, the screen works well when the camera is held low or high, and I found the AF quick enough and seemingly accurate. The response of the shutter in live view also seems good.

Image: Nikon has retained its choice of layouts for the rear-screen display, with text-based and graphically expressed options to suit personal preferences

Nikon D5300 - Still to test

The principal changes in this model are of the sort that will only be proved in testing, but at this stage their potential is worth pointing out. Using the higher-capacity Expeed 4 processor, Nikon claims it has been able to reduce noise in its images through the use of more complicated calculations. A related benefit is that now noise levels are lower the company is comfortable offering a higher ISO setting - the Nikon D5300 allows ratings of up to ISO 25,600. More complex calculations also provide the potential for better white balance assessment in automatic modes via a more comprehensive assessment of the scene, and a better rendition of colour overall.

Lower noise should also lead to better resolution of detail from the 24.2-million-pixel sensor, as should Nikon's decision to do without the micro-blurring effects of a low-pass (anti-aliasing) filter. Leaving the low-pass filter off the sensor has become very fashionable, and I suspect it will be a great draw for many photographers. Moiré in images created by a sensor with 24 million pixels, even an APS-C-sized sensor, is still something that is quite likely to occur, but there is also plenty of software to correct it after the event.

The other thing to note is that this model sees the introduction of a new battery cell, which Nikon says increases capacity from 500 shots to 600 compared to the cell used in the D5200. It annoys me when companies change their battery forms, but on this occasion the new cell and that used in the D5200 are interchangeable.

Obviously, I couldn't test the battery life of the camera, but we should take the increase as good news. I will also have to wait to test the Wi-Fi and GPS capabilities of this new model, but neither can be held as negative points just for their inclusion. The Wi-Fi integration means users will be able to control the camera from an Android or iOS device, and will be able to wirelessly transfer images for viewing, editing and sending while on the go.

Image: The new battery, which is backwards compatible with the D5200, offers a longer life. There is no low-pass filter on the sensor, for extra resolution

Nikon D5300 - Conclusion

It would be easy to dismiss the Nikon D5300 for being too similar to the D5200, but that really isn't the point. There is not much wrong with the D5200, and the changes that this new model brings can only make it better. Perhaps Nikon could have called it the D5200 ll, but I'm not sure it matters one bit.

The Nikon D5300 will cost around £730 body only and be available from 14 November.

Nikon Crams Full-Frame Sensor Into Its Legendary 1950s-Era F Series

<Nikon D5300 Black Friday Dealp>While the rest of the technological landscape is concentrating on making everything look smaller, sleeker, and more futuristic, cameras are going through a major throwback phase. It's pretty great.

The majority of today's old-school cameras aren't just using their looks to draw attention away from sub-par specs. Some of the highest-end cameras in the Fujifilm, Olympus, and Panasonic lineups have a retro slant. Sensor sizes, autofocus speeds, wireless capabilities, and other in-camera features continue to charge forward, but digital-camera bodies are reverting to the classic looks of the 1950s and 1960s.

Nikon has just joined the throwback party with the most advanced retro camera in recent memory. The Nikon Df puts the 16-megapixel full-frame sensor of the flagship D4 in a camera body that looks like the original Nikon F from the late 1950s. The D4 performs like a champ in low-light settings, so expect this camera to do the same.

Feature-wise, it falls somewhere between the D4 and the Nikon D600: It has the same sensor and generous ISO range as the D4 (100 - 12,800, expandable to 50 - 204,800), but like the D600, it has a slower maximum shutter speed of 1/4000 of a second, a 39-point autofocus system, a top continuous shooting speed of 5.5fps, and a SD/SDHC/SDXC card slot instead of the D4′s CompactFlash slot. Battery life also falls between the two cameras, with a CIPA rating of 1,400 shots per charge.

Like the camera it takes its design cues from, the Df doesn't shoot video. There's also no built-in flash or Wi-Fi capabilities, although it is compatible with Nikon's separately sold WU-1a adapter for offloading images wirelessly.

The Df's classic body comes in two color schemes: a silver/black two-tone motif, as well as an all-black colorway. There are knobs and buttons galore for quick access to settings, including a double-decker exposure-compensation/ISO dial, a shutter-speed dial next to the shutter button, and a front-mounted control wheel that you can use to adjust the speed blindly while looking through the camera's optical viewfinder or at its 3.2-inch LCD screen.

In late November, the Df can be yours for around three grand. The body alone will sell for $2,750, while a kit configuration with a new 50mm/F1.8 Nikkor prime lens is priced at $3,000. By itself, the lens will sell for $280.

Nikon brings Wi-Fi and improvements to D5300 DSLR, plus pricey 58mm pro-level prime lens

There are several noteworthy improvements in Nikon D5300 Black Friday Deal's new D5300 APS-C (DX) DSLR from its predecessor, the D5200. One of Nikon's best-selling and most popular models, the midrange 24.1-megapixel D5300's smaller and lighter body has improved ergonomics - there's more surface area on the grip for a tighter hold and more clearance between your fingers and the lens. Despite the body being smaller, the vari-angle flip-out LCD got bigger (3.2 inches from 3 inches in the D5200). With the Expeed 4 image processor the ISO range has increased (100-12,800). But the big addition is that Wi-Fi is now built into the camera - a first for Nikon DSLRs.

Another big change, Nikon has removed the optical low pass (anti-aliasing) filter from the 24.2-megapixel CMOS sensor, to improve the image quality of stills and videos - a trend that's happening with many new cameras. The D5300 has the same 39-point autofocus system and 5 frames-per-second continuous shooting as the D5200. There's also Nikon's Scene Reconigtion System that uses the 2,016-pixel RGB metering system to automatically select exposure, AF, and white balance based on the scene conditions.

Wi-Fi has been available in Nikon cameras via an optional adapter, but the D5300 will be the first to have it built in. It's also the first Nikon DSLR to have onboard GPS, which lets you geotag your images before you upload or e-mail them from the camera via a connected smartphone or tablet. You can also use a connected smart device as an external monitor for remote shooting.

For video capture, Nikon has added Full HD 1080p at 60p. There are nine special effects you can use to edit in-camera, including a "HDR painting" feature that lets you alter the colors of an image to make it look as if it was shot as a high-dynamic range photo.

The D5300 is on sale now for $1,400, which comes with the AF-S Nikkor 18-140mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR kit lens; if you're stepping up and you already have a set of Nikkor DX lenses, you can pick up just the body for $800. The camera comes in three colors: black, red, and a new gray option.

AF-S Nikkor 58mm f/1.4G lens

In addition to the D5300, Nikon has also announced a new pro-level prime lens, the AF-S Nikkor 58mm f/1.4G. Carrying the legacy of popular Noct Nikkor 58mm f/1.2 lens, this fixed 58mm focal length (35mm/FX equivalent; 87mm DX/cropped format) is ideal for shooting portraits, landscapes, and street photography, Nikon says, but it's all about achieving bokeh - that artistic background blurring - with the nine-blade diaphragm. Made for low-light capture, the lens has Nikon's Nano Crystal coating to avoid ghosting and flare. The Silent Wave Motor operates quietly when autofocusing, which is key for recording video.

This premium lens will go on sale later this month for $1,700.

The D5300′s built-in Wi-Fi connectivity feature can be used for transmitting images to a smart device for sharing as well as for remote shooting.

Nikon Releases Cryptic Teaser for New DSLR Camera

<Nikon D5300 Cheapp>A man stands in an open field, a soft breeze rustling long strands of green grass around him. He gazes out at the landscape.

Though that scene might seem like a perfect opener for a gritty, independent film or a self-reflective novel, it's actually the beginning of Nikon's new teaser ad. Viewers watch a mysterious man, clad in a beige trench coat, as he adjusts something unseen with a couple of clicks. Right when he lifts what we know to be a camera to his face, the scene changes back to him in the midst of the gloomy landscape.

That teaser doesn't show the camera but it includes a very important sound that excited many camera fiends online - the distinct click of an old-school shutter. That small clue paired with one line of dialogue at the end - "It's in my hands again" - seem to hint that Nikon will release a retro-styled DSLR camera.

Little else is known beyond hearsay, with Nikon Rumors conjecturing that the full-frame camera will be called the Nikon DF, for "digital fusion." The post also claims the camera will include the same autofocus system found in the D610 and that it will offer settings for aspect ratios of 1:1, 3:2 and 16:9.

On its official site, Nikon explains the short video as the first in a series called Pure Photography. The videos follow a photographer traveling through Scotland as he "reunites with his creative self during this uniquely ambitious trip."

Nikon D5300 DSLR Unveiled, 24.2MP Successor to the D5200

Posted on 18. Oct, 2013 by Steve in Digital Cameras

Nikon D5300 Cheap-with-18-140mm-Nikkor-lens.jpg">Nikon has unveiled the successor to the popular Nikon D5200 digital SLR, which the company launched almost one year ago, the new model is named Nikon D5300. The new Nikon D5300 will start to ship early next month with a retail price that is just under $800 for the camera body. The D5300 and the D5200 both share a similar body design, but there are minor differences or improvements that the D5300 has to offer buyers.

The improvements list is short and consists of features that enhance the photographic abilities of the camera and a feature that brings the camera up-to-date with a new digital camera market trend.

Improvements that will help the overall performance of the new Nikon D5300 over the now-old D5200 include a newly designed and higher resolution CMOS image sensor along with a brand new image processor.

Between the Nikon D5200 and the new Nikon D5300, the 24.2 megapixel D5300 has just 0.1 megapixels more resolution than the 24.1 megapixel D5200, however the D5300′s sensor has no built-in OLPF (optical low pass filter) and Nikon say's that will help with image clarity, both the old D5200 and new D5300 use similarly sized DX-format CMOS image sensors.

    Nikon D5300 digital SLR gallery:

The new image processor that you will be getting with the upcoming Nikon D5300 is Nikon's newly developed EXPEED 4 image processor. According to Nikon, the new EXPEED 4 offers fast performance while 'maximizing energy efficiency, reducing image noise and delivering true-to-life colors'. The D5200 digital SLR features the EXPEED 3 image processing engine.

After the new image sensor and processor the only other major new feature included with the new Nikon D5300 digital SLR is Wi-Fi. The camera will be shipped with Wi-Fi capabilities built-in that don't need any external accessories like the Nikon WU-1a. The built-in Wi-Fi will let you pair your D5300 to your mobile devices iOS or Android after you install the Nikon Wireless Mobile Utility free app. Also the Wi-Fi working with the cameras built-in GPS can geo-tag files all without external accessories.

However, with the Nikon Wireless Mobile Utility app you will be able to complete functions like remote shooting where you can use your mobile device as a live view enabled wireless remote for snapping photos, wireless transferring of photo and video files, manual file upload for sending files to your mobile device even when you're not paired to the device (the image just downloads later when you are paired).

After you consider all of those differences the Nikon D5300 isn't really a radically new camera compared to the out-going Nikon D5200. However nobody should have expected a totally different camera given the very short gap between the two cameras launches, the D5200 was launched November of last year.

Some big similarities include Full HD 1080p Video Recording at 60 fps, continuous Shooting up to 5 fps, expandable ISO from 100-25600, 39-Point auto-focusing system, active D-Lighting and built-in HDR, Nikon F mount support, and an at eye-level pentamirror optical viewfinder.

From an exterior design perspective you can really see the lack of a re-design in the D5300 compared to the D5200. The only difference in looks is the vari-angle LCD is now 3.2-inches with the D5300 instead of 3.1-inches. Even with the color options the new Nikon D5300 is much like the D5200, the new camera will be offered in Black, Red or Grey colors.

Camera seller B&H Photo Video is offering pre-orders for the Nikon D5300 body at $796.95 (same price for each color) and they are offering a body+14-140mm telephoto zoom lens kit (pictured first above) for $1,396.95. With this particular retailer you can expect your pre-ordered D5300 camera to ship on November 14, 2013 according to notice put on each listing.

Easy, Edible Ideas for a Delicious Halloween

Whipping up a batch of halloween cakes ideas-inspired treats shouldn't require a scary amount of time or energy.

Because by the time you've carved an army of pumpkins, costumed your pint-sized ghouls, purchased bushels of candy, and hung the requisite number of fake spider webs and black cat cutouts, time and patience for cooking up spooky grub may be in short supply.

So we've gathered a gaggle of ideas - vampire doughnuts, candied apple skulls, goblet graves and doughnut spiders - from Matthew Mead's new book, "Halloween Spooktacular," for setting a spooky tone for your Halloween table without setting you back.

    ---

    GOBLET GRAVE

Head to the craft store (or online) and pick up a silicone skull and crossbones ice cube tray. Fill each cavity with plain Greek yogurt, then use an offset spatula to smooth the tops and remove any excess yogurt from the tray. Freeze until solid (overnight is best).

Let the cubes soften at room temperature for several minutes, then remove the ice cubes from the tray. Arrange the cubes in a small bowl set over a larger bowl of crushed ice. Serve alongside goblets of grape juice.

    ---

    CANDIED APPLE CRANIUMS

Wash and dry 6 Red Delicious apples. Insert a 6- to 8-inch crab apple twig (cleaned) or a large frozen pop or candy stick. Set aside. Place 12 ounces of white candy melts in a medium heat-safe bowl. Set the bowl over a medium saucepan of simmering water. Stir until the candy has melted.

One at a time, dunk each apple into the candy melts, spooning it up the sides and over the top for an even coating. Set the coated apples upright on a sheet of waxed paper to set.

Meanwhile, use a rolling pin to roll out Tootsie Rolls until flat. Use a paring knife to cut round eyes and a heart-shaped nose from the flattened Tootsie Rolls. "Glue" the eyes and nose (mount the "heart" upside down) to the apples using piping gel or a bit of purchased frosting.

    ---

    VAMPIRE DOUGHNUTS

Make a stack of honey-glazed doughnuts on a large serving tray. Use a bamboo skewer to poke two fang holes in the top of each, then dribble red gel food coloring (sold in tubes in the grocer's baking aisle) coming out of the holes and down the sides of the doughnuts.

    ---

    DOUGHNUT SPIDER

Set a chocolate glazed doughnut in the center of a large serving platter. Place a chocolate cake doughnut up against it. The glazed doughnut forms the spider's body; the cake doughnut is the head. Place 2 chocolate doughnut holes on top of the cake doughnut to form eyes (use a dab of frosting to hold them in place). Top each doughnut hole with a dab of white or yellow frosting, then gently press a chocolate chip into each.

For the legs, arrange three sets of three chocolate doughnut holes coming off of each side of the "body" doughnut. If desired, additional frosting can be used to keep the leg doughnut holes in place.

Apple's iPhone 5S outsells cheaper iPhone 5c two to one

Where Apple stands in the smartphone market is clear: The iPhone is the one to beat. It's simultaneously a leader in specs and a vanity status symbol. The high end is its territory.

So when shoppers were given the choice between the latest iPhone and the ever so slightly cheaper iPhone 5C, they decided to go big or go home. Data from Consumer Intelligence Research Partners (CIRP) shows that the newest flagship iPhone 5s iphone cases potty training for boys video is outselling the cheaper one by more than two to one.

According to CIRP (via All Things D), the 5S accounted for 64% of total handset sales for Apple in the last days of September. The 5C only took 27% of sales, and the now two-year-old 4S making up the rest.

In some ways, this is good news for Apple. The 5C is cheaper, and presumably comes at a lower margin. Analysts feared that if a lower-margin product ate up some of Apple's own market share, its profit margins would eventually suffer. IHS says that the cost of building and shipping the iPhone 5S is only 30% of the sticker price. That's the gold mine that makes Apple shareholders rich. Then again, there was plenty of reason to accept the lower margins because the higher-end already bought them. Maps with pinpoints indicating which cell phones people use corresponds very well to a map showing income inequality.

In the map above, made by data visualization expert Eric Fischer, the red dots represent geolocated tweets from iPhone users; the green dots are from Google Androids. Manhattan and the well-heeled parts of Brooklyn and the New Jersey waterfront make up iPhone country. Central Brooklyn, Jersey City, and Newark have a much higher concentration of Android phones. Anecdotally, it seems like all of the beautiful, successful people in the world (even those paid by Microsoft to hawk Windows Phone), are iPhone users already. Of course Apple realizes the need to grab some of the middle shelf.

So if a middle-class buyer decides to get an Apple product, he or she knows that the product is a status symbol. Why get a brightly colored one that advertises that you didn't go all the way?

Of course, this is still early days, a time when die-hard Apple zealots and early adopters buy stupid amounts of electronics. When the holiday season comes and people give them as gifts, the cheaper iPhone might sell a little faster. For the geeks, however, you can't go halfway on a status symbol.

<sterlingp>NEW YORK - When Amazon unveiled the Kindle Fire HD tablet last year, the company's hype machine burst into overdrive. "The best tablet at any price," Amazon proclaimed.

Kindle Fire HD was and is a very good tablet, a viable option against strong competition from Google, Apple and others, and an excellent value, especially now at $139. But the best at any price? Sorry, can't go there.

Amazon wisely cooled things down with the introduction of the brand-new Kindle Fire HDX tablets. That's so even as the HDX raises the bar with more robust specs and new features, most prominently a live tech-support innovation called Mayday.

As with the Fire HD, HDX models come in 8.9-inch and 7-inch screen sizes (the latter being the one I reviewed). They boast outstanding stereo speakers and a scrolling carousel-type interface that intermingles icons for movies, apps, books and other content. Android is buried underneath.

These tablets provide a smooth passageway to Amazon's vast digital treasure trove of eBooks, movies, music and other content, especially for customers who prefer Amazon's ecosystem to say Google's or Apple's. And as before you can tap into the flicks and TV shows made available to subscribers of Amazon's $79-a-year Prime service.

Here are three new or expanded features that Amazon hopes will fire up interest in its new tablet line, while dousing the competition:

You used to have to stream the Prime content, but with the latest HD and HDX models you now have the choice to download tens of thousands of movies and TV shows as well. That's a big plus for anyone stuck on an airplane for hours without Wi-Fi.

The Prime Instant Video downloads feature is one of the key ways Amazon hopes to make its tablet stand out against rivals, especially since Amazon makes its content available (through free apps) to competitors. It's funny that way in tech: how companies are partners and rivals at the same time.

    AN EVEN MORE DETAILED X-RAY

Amazon is also expanding the X-Ray features that were available on prior models. With X-Ray when an actor wanders into a movie scene you can pull up biographical data on him or her (supplied by Amazon-owned IMDb ) as you're watching. New this time around is trivia. For example, I learned while streaming Flashdance that Kevin Costner was runner-up for the role given to Michael Nouri. Also new: X-Ray identifies any music playing in a scene. You can jump right to the store to buy a song and jump to scenes featuring other titles from the soundtrack.

Yet another new X-Ray feature lets you follow line-by-line lyrics on certain songs.

    MAYDAY PERSONALIZED HELP

To me the real killer differentiator in the Fire HDX tablets (but not Fire HD) is Mayday. When you're not sure how to do or discover something - finding out if your tablet has the latest software update, adding bookmarks to a Web page, learning how to use Kindle FreeTime to establish time limits and choose material your kids can safely access - you hit Mayday.

Within 15 seconds, a small window pops open on the screen with a live tech support rep who you can see but who cannot see you. But the rep can see precisely what's on your screen and share control. He or she can draw circles or arrows to demonstrate what needs to be done and, if you wish, do things for you. Amazon says the rep cannot see your password, should you have to enter it at any point. The rep can pull up your account info if need be.

Amazon is staffing up so that people will be available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, with Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos insisting during a recent interview that the company will be Mayday-ready Christmas day. Mayday staffers appeared quickly and politely responded to my questions at all hours of the day and night, but the true test comes once all users have access to the Mayday feature.

Amazon is promising another fresh feature for its latest Fire devices called Second Screen that will let you fling shows and movies from your tablet to a big-screen TV. Second Screen (which I couldn't test) hasn't launched yet and will only work initially on Sony PS3s and PS4s and Samsung TVs. A related feature will let you wirelessly "mirror" or display on the TV what is on your tablet if you attach a special Miracast dongle. We've seen similar mirroring on other tablets.

OTHER NOTES ON THE NEW HARDWARE

Amazon has moved power and volume controls to the back. It was sometimes a minor nuisance to get at them when I had on the new magnetic "Origami" cover accessory that folds into a stand for the tablet.

The 7-inch and 8.9-inch models have front-facing HD cameras; only the larger tablet has a rear-facing one as well.

Amazon says you can get up to 11 hours of battery life in mixed use and up to 17 hours for reading in between charges. But I got less than five hours, a disappointing result, even considering my very harsh testing conditions (streaming a movie over Wi-Fi, brightness cranked up to the max).

Amazon now claims more than 80,000 third-party apps in its app store, but that's a fraction compared with what Android and iOS have available.

That's one of the reasons why it's still hard to declare the Kindle Fire HDX as the best tablet at any price. But I like it a lot. And it's very good for people seeking an affordable and solid tablet. I expect lots of folks to be gleefully shouting Mayday.

BOTTOM LINE ON AMAZON KINDLE FIRE HDX

Pro. Mayday live tech-support feature. X-Ray for movies, music. Vast amount of available Amazon content. Great reading features.

Con. Battery disappointed in test. Relatively few third-party apps compared with major competitors. 7-inch model lacks rear camera.

    Pricing/availability.

    * 7-inch model (unit tested) ships Oct. 18 with Wi-Fi only and starts at $229 with 16GB and rises to $269 for 32GB and $309 for 64GB. A $329 (on up) version that adds a 4G cellular option ships Nov. 14.

    * The $379 Wi-Fi-only 8.9-inch model ships Nov. 14, with a $479 4G version coming Dec. 10.
(Prices mentioned here factor in what Amazon refers to as, "special offers," meaning ads. You can do away with the ads if you pay more.)

Apple Reopens In-Store Pickup for iPhone 5s

5s iphone cases english school for girls kuwait-in-store-pickup.jpg?thumb=y">

Don't trust the postal service to handle the delivery of your new iPhone 5s? Fear not: Apple's in-store pick-up option has returned this week, if only in limited capacity.

Depending on your choice of size, color, and carrier, the new flagship device is available for pick up in various stores, including New York's Grand Central, Fifth Avenue, and SoHo locations.

The Personal Pickup program allows consumers to make a purchase online, then visit the chosen store to pick up the device (or have someone else go in your place). Skip the lines and leave your Apple Store with iPhone in hand, ready to start placing calls and taking photos. With Personal Setup, a store employee will also get the device up and running before you leave the store.

Options are limited. A silver 64GB iPhone 5s from Verizon, for example, is available today from the SoHo, 14th St., and Grand Central Apple Stores. But the same device for AT&T is listed as "unavailable for pickup." A 32GB space gray iPhone 5s from Sprint was also available from most stores in Manhattan, but the same smartphone from Verizon was nowhere to be found. Visit Apple's website to see if your desired iPhone is in stock anywhere near you.

One option that is hard to come by in any version or carrier is the gold iPhone 5s. There is still a waiting period for online orders, but those who want it now can always shell out the big bucks on eBay.

Cupertino boasted a record-setting launch weekend, selling more than 9 million new iPhones (both the 5s and 5c) in its first three days. With such success, Apple was forced to drop the in-store pick-up option from its site amidst dwindling supplies.

According to the Apple website, the iPhone 5s is still set to ship in October, which is just one day away. However, those who bought the 5s on launch date were reporting that their estimated arrival dates were in late October. It appears that the multi-colored iPhone 5c is readily available online and in stores.

Meanwhile, Virgin Mobile USA last week announced plans to carry Apple's new smartphones without a contract, beginning Oct. 1. Pricing has not yet been revealed; unlimited data and messaging plans start from $35 per month, with a $5 monthly discount for buyers who register for automatic payments. The Sprint-owned wireless carrier's "unlimited" data throttles after 2.5GB.

Toshiba's twin-lens camera module for smartphones, tablets allows 3D imaging and post-capture focus simulation

    by Mike Tomkins

It seems to be the week for mobile 3D modeling! Just two days ago, we reported on a Kinect-like addon device for Apple's iPad tablet. Now, Toshiba has unveiled a twin-lensed camera module for smartphones and tablets which does much the same thing, albeit in a different way. It also allows some neat post-capture effects such as depth-of-field and point-of-focus adjustment.

The Occipital Structure Sensor we mentioned earlier this week uses an infrared laser to project a grid over your subject, and from this can calculate a depth map which corresponds to a still image or video stream captured by the device. Toshiba, by contrast, records the scene using two separate, side-by-side 5-megapixel cameras, then calculates a depth map by comparing differences between the two photos. The end result is the same, though: You should be able to record photos with 3D depth information, and -- with the appropriate software -- create 3D models of your subjects. And from the depth map, Toshiba can simulate a narrow depth-of-field effect, placing the focus point wherever you want it. (The company also suggests that the depth map can be used to identify and remove objects from a photo altogether.)

Unlike the Structure Sensor, which is intended to remain an addon device, Toshiba's TCM9518MD camera module is designed to be built into your next smart gadget. (Of course, there's nothing to stop somebody creating an accessory based around it, either.) It has dimensions of just 18 x 12 x 4.65mm, and twin 1/4-inch type, 5-megapixel sensors with 1.4µm pixels, providing 10-bit raw data. Two four-element f/2.4 lenses have a fixed 61.8 degree horizontal field of view. The lenses have a fixed-focus design, with all focus effects emulated in software. That allows a thinner lens profile. Lens shading correction is built-in.

No resolution was specified for the depth map of the Structure Sensor, but Toshiba does state its resolution, and it's fairly low. You can generate a VGA depth map to accompany your five megapixel images, which means you have one pixel of depth map information for every 16 pixels (4x4 array) of photo information. In other words, your depth map has 1/4 the linear resolution of the still image.

The twin-lens design brings an interesting benefit in another area, though. According to Toshiba, by pairing info from both cameras it can create a 13-megapixel output image from the two 5-megapixel source images. It's likely to work better for distant subjects than those nearer the camera, though, because both cameras will have more strongly-differing viewpoints of the subject the closer it gets.

And as well as shooting single 5-megapixel and twin-lens interpolated 13-megapixel stills, the Toshiba TCM9518MD camera module can also output 5-megapixel stills from both lenses simultaneously, and shoot 1080p30, 720p60, or 480p120 video. It can also output full-res sensor data at 24 frames per second.

Firmware Friday: Casio and Panasonic update cameras; Sigma improves Canon-mount lenses

    by Mike Tomkins

The weekend is almost here, and you know what that means -- it's time for our weekly Firmware Friday roundup of all that's new in the world of camera updates. This week, we have several fairly straightforward updates to report on from Casio, Panasonic, and Sigma.

First up, Casio: The Japanese company is best-known for its watches, calculators, and keyboards in the USA, having discontinued its camera line here some years ago. In other markets, though, Casio still sells digital cameras, and four models in its unusual, swiveling EX-TR-series camera line have just received new firmware. In all four cases, there is but one change: improved reading of MicroSD cards. It isn't clear whether the improvement is in terms of read performance or read stability, but either way it's a worthwhile change for EX-TR series owners. Grab the updates at the links below:

Panasonic, meanwhile, is offering updated firmware for its Lumix DMC-GX7 compact system camera. There is only one change listed in the release notes, but it's an important one: improved stability whenever the camera is powered on. Get the firmware for Windows or Mac OS computers from Panasonic's Joint Update Service for Four Thirds website. (Scroll down, read the license, then click the 'accepted' button. You'll see the GX7 listed on the resulting page, along with a link to its firmware download page.)

And finally, we come to Sigma. The company -- whose lens factory we were recently priveliged to tour -- has shipped updated for two of its lenses in Canon-mount form. The updates are applied with its optionally-available USB dock, and it has also issued updated versions of its Windows and Mac OS software for the dock, so even if you don't own the Canon-mount variant of either lens, you'll want to update your dock software. (The newer version of the dock software retains your customized autofocus and stabilization settings in each lens even after the lens firmware has been updated.)

The two lenses updated by Sigma are the Canon-mount 17-70mm F2.8-4 DC MACRO OS HSM C013 zoom and 35mm F1.4 DG HSM A012 prime, and in each case the new firmware makes just two changes. Firmware version 1.01 for either lens will reduce noise from the autofocus drive system during AF operation. For the 17-70mm zoom, the new firmware will also improve optical stabilizer stability. The new firmware for the 35mm prime, meanwhile, allows for smoother movement of the AF system as it starts or stops moving.

Get the updated Sigma Optimization Pro v1.1 software here, and the updated Canon-mount lens firmware here.

Russia Boosts Security For Sochi Olympics With Pantsir-S Systems

Six Pantsir-S short-range air defense systems have been delivered to the Russian military ahead of schedule to ensure security during the Sochi Winter Olympics in 2014, a senior defense ministry official said.

The XXII Olympic Winter Games are scheduled to take place from February 7 to 23 in the Russian Black Sea resort city of Sochi. The first Winter Olympics to be held in Russia are widely regarded as an opportunity for the country to showcase its economic achievements under President Vladimir Putin.

"We will do everything possible to accomplish the task of protecting the Russian airspace along the southern borders and to ensure security during the Winter Olympics," Maj. Gen. Viktor Gumenny, the commander of air defense troops of the Russian Air Force, said Saturday.

The general said the Pansir-S air defense systems would initially be sent to the Ashuluk firing range in southern Russia to ensure the proper training of their crews during the next two months.

The Pantsir-S is a combined gun-missile system featuring a wheeled vehicle mounting a fire-control radar and electro-optical sensor, two 30-mm cannons and up to 12 57E6 radio-command guided short-range missiles.

The system is designed to take on a variety of targets flying at low level including cruise missiles and aircraft, and can effectively engage targets at up to 20 kilometers.

The Defense Ministry has reportedly ordered 100 Pantsir-S units for Russia's Aerospace Defense Forces.

A maneuverable track-bearing variant is currently being developed by Russia's High Precision Weapons corporation, to be put in service with the Russian Ground Forces and Airborne Troops in the near future.

    • Twitter images show flyer that the cops handed out on Saturday
    • Flyer urges people to upgrade for 'added security' to their devices
    • Cops ask people to register devices with their 'Operation Identification Program'
    • The iOS 7 security features include a Find My iPhone Activation Lock that asks for an Apple ID and a password before the feature can be disabled
    • It also promotes fingerprint recognition

    PUBLISHED: 19:35 EST, 22 September 2013 | UPDATED: 20:05 EST, 22 September 2013

New York police officers were handing out flyers to people around New York City on Saturday urging them to upgrade their devices to Apple's new iOS7 operating system.

NYPD's Public Awareness Notice promotes the software as giving 'added security to your devices'.

The NYPD notice also urges people to register their devices with their 'Operation Identification Program'.

One of those given a flyer was Michael Hoffman, who posted a picture on his showing the paper from the police that was given to him at his subway stop.

His tweet says: 'Four uniformed NYPD officers were at my subway stop tonight asking me to upgrade to iOS 7. Not a joke!'

The message of the NYPD flyer reads: 'By downloading the new operating system, should your device get lost or stolen, it cannot be reprogrammed without an Apple ID or password.'

The police are referring to the new iOS 7 security features, which include a Find My iPhone Activation Lock that asks for an Apple ID and a password before the feature can be disabled.

If a phone is stolen, the thief can't stop the original owner from being able to locate it. It will also prevent people from deleting data from the handset.

The software also promotes security through fingerprint recognition.

The new iPhone 5s has a built-in fingerprint scanner that reads a users' prints using the home button.

Touch ID replaces an App Store password when buying music, apps or books.

It uses a 'laser cut sapphire crystal' to take a high-res image scan and the Touch ID software in iOS 7 determines whether the print belongs to the owner or not.

Apple reassured users that the feature is secure by explaining 'all fingerprint information is encrypted and stored securely inside the device's chip' adding the prints are not stored on an Apple server, or backed up to iCloud.

According to one comment on 'the NYPD getting the word out about iOS 7 is a GOOD THING for EVERYONE'.

'Less petty theft for the NYPD to be diverting resources to (they have a dedicated iPhone theft task force), less of your iPhones getting stolen. iPhone theft is a VERY well-documented problem in NYC,' said the person using the name, Jaro.

Apple customers worldwide have been able to download the company's latest operating system since September 18.

It is being hailed as a new beginning for the firm.

Everything from email to the calendar, texts, phone keypad, photos and notes look and work differently on the software.

Importantly, traditional icons have been scrapped under the redesign masterminded by Apple's British design chief Sir Jonathan Ive.

Ive introduced iOS 7 as an 'important new direction' when he showcased the software at Apple's annual Worldwide Developers Conference in San Francisco earlier this year.

The operating system has a cleaner look than its predecessors and has been described by Apple's CEO Tim Cook as 'the biggest change to iOS since the introduction of the iPhone.'

Its launch last week coincides with the release of two new iPhones which went on sale on Friday.

Apple's iPhone 5S is a high-end model that has a fingerprint scanner built into the phone's home button.

It also comes with a 64-bit chip designed to make switching between apps and using the handset and software smoother and faster.

Apple's iOS 7 has been designed to make the iPhone appear bigger.

Its features are deliberately designed to take advantage of the entire screen on iPhones and iPads.

This has been criticised as Apple's attempt to rival phones with larger, five-inch and upward screens including Samsung's Galaxy S4 and the Note 3.

Text on iOS 7 appears sharper, while a Control Centre on the phone allows users to adjust settings with just one swipe from of the screen.

DOES APPLE'S IOS 7 MAKES THE IPHONE MORE SECURE THAN EVER?
